We Move Independence We Move You

This Fourth of July, our nation marks a historic milestone: 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

While Independence Day gives us an opportunity to reflect on our country's history, it also invites us to think about what independence means today.

At the Utah Transit Authority, independence is about more than a moment in history. It's something we help create every day.

Independence means getting to school, showing up at work, making it to team practice. It means staying connected to friends, family, healthcare, and your community. It means having a reliable way to get to work and the freedom to explore Utah with confidence. Every day, UTA helps create independence through mobility, access to opportunity, and connections that improve quality of life.

Since UTA was founded in 1970 with just 68 buses serving the Salt Lake Valley, our purpose has remained the same: providing safe, reliable public transportation that helps people move through life. That's why We Move You is more than a mission statement — it's a reflection of the independence we help create every day, empowering Utahns to reach their destinations, pursue their goals, create memories, and stay connected to their communities.

Over the past five decades, Utah has experienced tremendous growth, and UTA has grown alongside it:

  • 1970: UTA is founded
  • 1973: Service expands into Davis and Weber counties
  • 1985: Service extends into Utah County
  • 1999: TRAX light rail begins operation
  • 2002: During the Winter Olympic Games, UTA moves more than 4 million passengers
  • 2008: FrontRunner commuter rail launches
  • 2013: The S-Line begins service
  • 2018: Utah Valley Express (UVX) begins service
  • 2019: UTA On Demand launches
  • 2023: Ogden Express (OGX) opens
  • 2026: Midvalley Express (MVX) begins service

Today, UTA serves more than 40 million riders each year across buses, TRAX, FrontRunner, S-Line, On Demand, and bus rapid transit. Every trip represents something important: a student reaching a classroom, an employee arriving at work, a family attending an event, or a neighbor accessing essential services.

As Utah continues to grow, so does our commitment to keeping people connected to the places and opportunities that matter most.

This Independence Day, we're proud to celebrate our nation's history alongside the independence that public transit helps make possible every day.

We Move Independence. We Move You.
